Prompt 3

Above, TikTok scenes depicting the “Holocaust Challenge.”

At least 6 million people lost their lives during the holocaust. In the era of a pandemic, we seem keenly aware of the loss of life in our county, our region, our state, our country and globally. Six. Million. People. That’s no laughing matter. Until it is. TikTok, in late August, was the site for the “Holocaust Challenge,” in which video makers represented themselves as victims of the mass killings. I don’t need to tell you how warped and insensitive this is; there’s been a tremendous, and justified, outcry from the public in protest of these videos. And, too, there’s the recent TikTok Benadryl challenge, which has claimed the life of a 15-year-old from Oklahoma who ingested far, far too much of the over-the-counter allergy relief drug and died from its toxicity. The most recent number for United States TikTok numbers estimates user totals at around 100 million. As such, it can have a tremendous effect on culture and politics. Here’s the prompt, what’s your take on “challenges” in general? The “Ice Bucket Challenge” from a few years back seems relatively harmless (except for that cold bit!) and brought awareness to the disease of ALS. Let me know your thoughts, for instance, have you ever done a challenge? Have you or someone you know been negatively impacted by a challenge? Share your thoughtful thoughts in the posts below.
